Mistakes

We all know that even the best authors out there can make a mistake once and a while. Take a look at some of the mistakes J.K. Rowling made in the books. If you find any more errors in the books, please e-mail me

New mistakes marked with *

Book 1

  • In the letter Hogwarts school sends out at the beginning of the year it says you may also bring a cat, toad or owl, but Ron brings a Rat.

  • Petunia says that when Lily went to Hogwarts she came back every vacation with pockets full of frog spawn, turning tea cups into rats BUT THAT'S ILLEGAL!!!!

  • At the end of the sorting it says that there are three more people to be sorted, when there are really four. They were: Dean Thomas, Lisa Turpin, Ron Weasley, and Blaise Zabini. (Only in American Version) - Thanks Matt

  • In book 1, Students are to sit on a 3-legged stool to be sorted... In all other books, it is a 4-legged stool.

  • Nearly Headless Nick says that he hasn't eaten in nearly 400 hundred years, but in Book 2 he claims that he has 500th deathday. (pg. 123)*

  • Before the trip to the zoo, Dudley's friend Piers is described as "a scrawny boy with a face like a rat", but 8 pages later it says "Piers, Dennis, Malcolm, and Gordon were all big and stupid" How could Piers be both scrawny and big? (pg. 23, 31)*

  • When Harry meets Quirrell in the pub, he shakes his hand and he is perfectly fine, yet when he touches his hand later in the book he dies*

Book 2

  • In the 2nd book Dumbledore tells Harry that Voldemort is the only remaining descendant of Salazar Slytherin although he is last DESCENDANT.

  • In the 4th book Ron says that nothing that has anything to do with voice recorder cameras ect. that it would wack. Well in the 2nd book Colin Creevy has a camera that he takes pictures  of Harry (May not be a mistake as Colin's camera is a "magical" camera that takes moving pictures of people instead of normal pictures)

  • When Harry and Ron can't get through the barrier at Platform 9 and 3/4, Ron asks Harry "Do you have any pocket money?" when Harry replies "The Dursleys haven't given me pocket money in about six years." This is untrue as in Book 1 they sent Harry a 50 pence piece for Christmas.*

Book 3

  • Black told Harry Voldemort has been hiding for 15 years. But Harry is 13 in this book and was came in contact with him 12 years ago.

  • In Book 3, Marcus Flint is still mentioned as Slytherin Captain, but he would've finished school by this time since he was a 6th year in Book 1. (Ch 13, p. 263, 305)

  • In Book 1, Marcus Flint is introduced as a 6th Year student and Slytherin Captain. (Ch 11,  p. 185)

  • In the third book, after Pettigrew has been captured, Lupin does not transform into a wolf on the night of the full moon until it comes out from behind a cloud and the light strikes him directly.  BUT if this were the way his werewolf curse really worked, he would be able to avoid ever having to transform just by staying indoors on nights when the moon was full.

  • In Chapter 6, pg 113, Hagrid says "Trotting toward them were a dozen of the most bizarre creatures Harry had ever seen" . . . . Then on the next page, Hagrid says "Once you got over the first shock of seeing something that was half horse, half bird, you started to appreciate the hippogriffs' gleaming coats, changing smoothly from feather to hair, each of them a different color: stormy gray, bronze, pinkish roan, gleaming chestnut, and inky black" Well I thought a dozen was 12. . . And if you count, there are only 5 colors (Ch 6,  p. 113)

Book 4

  • In the 3rd book it says that Sirius Black had a trial. But in the 4th book Sirius says he didn't get a trial.

  • It said that they banned flying carpets because it was a Muggle kind of thing. But brooms are too.

  • Harry and Ron are sitting around the fire "the Sunday before they leave" the next day (Monday) they go on the train which takes the whole day but the next morning Ron looks  down the Monday column of his timetable

  • It clearly states that any mechanical objects would go haywire in Hogwarts, yet Harry has a perfectly normal wristwatch. (It happens to break during the 2nd task of the Triwizard Tournament though)

  • On (p. 174) in the 3rd book, it says "Diggory was a fifth year and a lot bigger than Harry" yet in the 4th book it says that Diggory was a 7th year and old enough to enter the Triwizard Tournament. What happened to his 6th year?*

  • When the carriages come to take the students back to the Hogwarts Express, Harry mentions that they are "horse-less."  This is a point where he's already seen someone die (Cedric), so shouldn't he see the Thestrals?*

  • After Harry has had the premonition/dream in Divination and guesses the password to Dumbledore's office, he goes in the office. After the little bit of questioning about Bartemus Crouch, it says "'Dumbledore, come!' said Crouch angrily. But Crouch was killed the night before, so who is this speaking? We don't know that the Fake Mad-Eye Moody is Baretmus Crouch Jr. yet, so is this a bit of foreshadowing? ( p. 503) *

Book 5

  • When Draco attempts to take points from Gryffindor, Hermione responds "Prefects aren't allowed to take points away." But Percy (the prefect) takes five points away from Gryffindor in Book 2.(Book 2, CH9, p. 158), (Book 5, CH28., p.625) *
